Car Radio Streaming Is Growing...

(Weekend Edition)

A new study by knowDigital shows in-car streaming has grown to 14%. That's the percentage of listeners who stream at least 5 minutes per week in-car. And those that stream listen to other forms of radio. Sam Milkman, president of knowDigital tells Media Life Magazine that "(respondents) start their drives with FM radio. The study revealed a lot of reasons why they still turn to traditional radio. There's certainly a lot of reasons why they rely upon traditional broadcasters. Some have satellite radio -- these are people who are interested in audio media in the car in general, or just audio media in general. So it didn't surprise us a lot had satellite radio." ...

While in-car listening is mostly done while commuting is not surprising but Milkman raises a point that is surprising. "They're highly interested in audio of all kinds. And beyond that they probably are looking for something different, some variety and customization, all the characteristics that apply to streamers in general." Car manufacturers may be getting too fancy with the installation of new internet listening devices because this study shows that drivers are content to use their phone's internet connection, "Bluetooth or otherwise" says Milkman...

Apparently people still believe that car radios sound better than any radio they own. If you look back over the years, you always remember the best-sounding car radio you ever had. It just always sounds better on a car radio, doesn't it? Milkman agrees: "They (respondents) think the quality is better. They perceive the quality to be better, and they forgive the technical limitations. So if it cuts out or buffers, they understand how often that happens and they're not bothered by it." ...

The Argument Against FM Chips...

There are those in radio that believe the installation of FM chips in mobile devices will bring a new generation of a modern day version of transistor radios. I'm not one of those people. I hate to disagree with a former WRKO alum but when Peter Smyth, CEO of Greater Media advocates FM chips in phones for safety reasons - a noble thought, I believe that the first place people go to find out the present danger they face is to news and weather, not radio. And the information they seek is available in an instant...

One thing I agree with Peter on is that "no consumer is going to go out and buy an inferior phone just because one or two manufacturers plugged in a tuner chip." Peter however, believes that if manufacturers install chips in mobile devices they will be used. That, I'm not so sure of. I believe that mobile device consumers are looking for the next cool app to download and chances are it's a game, something radio can't supply...

Don't get me wrong, I'm for anything that can make radio bigger, stronger and more relevant but I don't believe the answer can be found in a mobile device. Radio needs to fix its product and make living with it indispensable just like mobile devices have become...

Are Buyers Starting To Doubt Digital Media Strength?

(1st Edition)

Apparently media buyers aren't that sold on digital media. Digital might be the fastest growing medium in the U.S. but a new STRATA study reports a renewed interest in traditional media. Could the love affair with digital be over? In my view, it's not. Seventy percent of agency buyers intend to invest more money into online advertising this year. The concern about digital interest seems to be the decline of 2% (80% - 78%) in spending from Q3 to Q4 in 2010. A 2% decline in anything is no cause for concern - not at this stage in the growth of digital media...

Eleven percent of agency buyers report they're already putting more money into digital than traditional media but almost 40% (39%) believe online will never overtake traditional. "It's not the standalone piece that people were hoping for, but it remains an integral part of a campaign," says STRATA marketing chief J.D. Miller. The STRATA report shows that digital display remains the top pick for ad buyers (76%), followed by search (57%) and then social media (56%). As you might expect, Facebook is the top social media focus for advertisers (83%), followed by YouTube (38%) and Twitter (36%). And there's a reason you're always asked about your location online. Location-based advertising continues to stay well off the radar for advertisers - a staggering 63% still say it's not in their 2011 plans...

The big rub in whatever reluctance remains in buying digital is return-on-investment. Unless and until there's a way to measure ROI on social media, there will be doubt about investing in it. Someone, somewhere has to come up with proof that social media can sell a product...
